Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Take Up Arms Again' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the tone of their exchange, heightening strains between the two countries after American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela NicolĂĄs Maduro from office.

"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," Trump added.

Escalating Tensions coupled with Claims

Addressing journalists over the weekend, the US president hinted at analogous use of force towards the South American nation, stating the country is also "very ill" and governed by a problematic figure involved in producing the drug and distributing it to the US."

Although Colombia stands as the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, no proof exists implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation has long been a close partner of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval in the US capital, but relations have worsened markedly after Trump came to office.

Colombia’s drug trade is mainly overseen by illegal armed groups like the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters laid down arms after a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Response

In response to a query whether armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

The Colombian leader, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the last century, rejected these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not a narco," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the president, which a large part of the country loves and respects, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," he admonished.

From Insurgent to President

Petro spent a period in his early life participating of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the presidency.

"I pledged to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for Colombia I would take up weapons once more," he vowed.

Heightened Measures and Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister announced that the national leader's personal security was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures spanning Colombian politics have denounced the notion of a US attack against their nation.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he urged US military personnel to refuse orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his wife and a number of key allies.

At the same time while America bolstered its troop levels near Venezuela and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted operations on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
